Alex Sun is a Shanghai-born Canadian painter whose practice has unfolded across China, Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore. Her work explores place, memory and belonging, drawing on a life shaped by movement between cultures.

Sun began painting seriously in Shanghai in 1997, shortly before leaving China for Canada. After a brief return to painting in Toronto around 2005, her practice was interrupted for many years before she returned to the studio with a renewed focus.

Working primarily in acrylic, Sun draws on photographs and experiences accumulated across different periods of her life. Landscapes, figures and remembered scenes are transformed through colour, scale and recollection, allowing familiar places to move between observation and memory.

Her recent work extends these concerns through Islandness, exploring water, migration and belonging, alongside new works examining the relationship between painting, photography and the remembered image.
